Dead City of Karadag by Sergey Melnikoff

Discover the unique beauty of Karadag Nature Reserve, where the sea, land, and intricate layers of volcanic rocks intersect. The name “Karadag,” which means “black mountains” in Crimean Tatar, may be deceiving as not all parts of the mountains are black. Various angles and times of day reveal different shades of color, creating a mesmerizing landscape of caves, grottoes, and intricately weathered rocks.
While the status of a biosphere reserve may prohibit visitors from exploring its territory, photographer Sergey Melnikoff was granted special permission by Dr. Borys Paton, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine to capture the breathtaking scenery of Karadag.
One of the most iconic spots within the reserve is the “Dead City,” captured in a stunning two-meter panoramic photograph encased in thick acrylic glass. This masterpiece portrays a sunset in soft tones, with dark blue sea, black rocks, and twisted branches of wind-swept trees. Come and experience the magic of Karadag Nature Reserve, where nature’s artistry is on full display.
