One-of-a-Kind Artwork for a Worthy Cause: “The Bird” by Olga Mashevska
The artwork “The Bird” is filled with faith and hope for the end of the terrifying times for Ukraine! It sings about my desire to live and not bury my acquaintances and strangers after every piece of news. We have all become one, because we experience every death as our own. The bird sings: We are alive! We have already won!
Olga Mashevska, a Ukrainian artist, national master, author of books, illustrator, volunteer, and educator. She is a participant in city, regional, and international initiatives aimed at promoting Ukrainian folk art. She is the author of the world’s first book on the Samchykivskyi painting style and the founder of the first international distance learning courses on the basics of Samchykivskyi painting.
Since 2022, Olga Mashevska has been actively involved in art volunteering, decorating buildings, public transport stops, and shelters for children with Samchykivskyi paintings. The master involves children, local residents, and her students in painting objects. She also transforms Russian weapons into art objects that volunteers sell to raise funds for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Currently, Olga is restoring frescoes in the Zazymskyi Church in the Kyiv region together with her daughters. Her active position is associated with her belief that even during war, one should not give up, lose hope, but live life to the fullest. Together, we are united, and this is already a victory!
Decorative painting is a special symbolic code of Ukrainian art for the master, based on love for the homeland, land, flowers, birds, and more. The artist creatively interprets the traditions of Samchykivskyi decorative painting, creating interesting compositions in a naive folk style.
The master’s works are in the collections of national museums, personal collections in Ukraine, Poland, Canada, the United States, Italy, France, Germany, and Israel.
